The golden age of Hollywood, from 1920 to 1950 was a time that photographically, gave rise to some of the best and most creative images that have even been captured. Master photographers such as Karsh pioneered and defined a lighting style that when teamed with the attitudes of that time, have become the definitive look of the golden age of Hollywood. The lighting style that was used in this era depended on massive tungsten spot lights and giant sound stages for the room to work. As time moved on, this awesome look fell out of favor due to the collapse of the studio star system and the rise of the realism movement. A few years ago, I wondered if it would be possible to re-create the lighting style using modern lighting technology as found in the typical studio. I gathered some reference material and ran some test shoots to define the pitfalls and have re-discover the techniques to create the glamour Hollywood style and can now produce them in the confines of a modern studio setting. The galleries above are the results of the early test shoots.
